Seniors

A few changes resulting from health care reform for senior citizens and Medicare enrollees are outlined below:

Closing the Donut Hole

  • In 2010 Medicare beneficiaries in the donut hole (the gap in Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage) were given $250 rebates.
  • More discounts on prescription drugs will be available in 2011 including a 50% discount on drugs for those in donut hole (excludes low-income people that receive subsidies).
  • The donut hole will be reduced and eventually closed between 2012 and 2020.  Meanwhile, there will be savings on brand name and generic drugs until donut hole is closed in 2020.

Preventive Care

  • Medicare enrollees will have access to free preventive health services starting Jan. 2011, including vaccinations and cancer screenings.
  • Copayments and deductibles for Medicare-covered preventative services will be eliminated.
  • Medicare enrollees will qualify for free annual “wellness exams” from their primary doctor.

Other Changes

  • Medicare Advantage plan costs will be more aligned with those of “original” Medicare program.
  • Affordable long-term care insurance plans will be created to provide cash benefits allowing seniors and people with disabilities to get the support services they need.
  • Better care after being discharged from the hospital will be encouraged by linking payments between hospitals and care facilities.
  • The Elder Justice Act was passed to address elder abuse and neglect.
